About James W. Gunter
I am a teacher, writer, tutor, musician, and book collector with a deep interest in literature, history, music, theology, and the life of the mind.
My work brings together several related pursuits: helping students learn to read and write well, teaching guitar to beginner and intermediate players, writing about Tolkien and the moral imagination, collecting and selling worthwhile books, and creating resources for families, students, and thoughtful readers.
At the center of all of this is a simple conviction: good books, careful thought, beautiful music, and patient teaching still matter.
Teaching and Tutoring
I have spent much of my adult life teaching students to read carefully, write clearly, think logically, and speak with confidence. My teaching background includes literature, writing, history, grammar, philosophy, and the broader humanities.
Through tutoring, I work with students who need help organizing essays, understanding difficult texts, improving grammar and style, preparing speeches, or growing in confidence as readers and writers. I especially enjoy working with middle school, high school, homeschool, and early college students.
My approach is patient, structured, and practical. I want students not only to complete the assignment in front of them, but to become stronger thinkers and clearer communicators.
Writing and The Westering House
I write about Tolkien, myth, literature, and the moral imagination through The Westering House, my twice-weekly paid Substack publication and accompanying podcast.
The Westering House is devoted to careful, serious, and accessible reflection on Tolkien’s works and the larger literary, theological, and imaginative traditions surrounding them. It is for readers who want to think more deeply about stories, virtue, beauty, language, longing, home, exile, courage, and hope.
Music and Guitar
I also teach beginner and intermediate guitar lessons for acoustic and electric players.
My background in guitar comes from years of playing, recording, performing, and teaching. I played and performed extensively in high school and college, and I enjoy helping new and developing players understand the instrument in a clear, practical way.
My guitar lessons are best suited for students who want to build real musical confidence through chords, rhythm, technique, songs, theory, improvisation, and steady practice.
Academic Background
I hold a B.A. in History from Southern Arkansas University, where my studies strengthened my interest in historical thinking, literature, language, and the humanities. My academic interests include medieval literature, Tolkien, Old English literature, classical education, intellectual history, and the relationship between story, virtue, and imagination.
For visitors who need a fuller academic overview, my curriculum vitae is available here.
A Personal Note
This website gathers the main strands of my work in one place: teaching, writing, music, books, and conversation about the things that form the mind and soul.
Whether you are looking for tutoring, guitar lessons, Tolkien essays, a podcast, a seminar, or a good book, I hope this site gives you a clear place to begin.
